When we decided to offer our support to the community in the quest for a greener Red Deer, we knew it was the right thing to do. But where to begin? Well, we started by looking at what we could do right in the Library with a Green Team.
Here’s what we’ve done so far:
- The Green Team
- Recycle Boxes
- Book Bags
- Green Garden
- New Dishes
- Partnering with Sustainable Red Deer
- Other
The Green Team – This group of staff helps to direct the project by offering advice and direction. The members are excited about the project. They have created displays, found books and other resources, organized and offered programs, and much more.
Recycle Boxes – We realized we needed more public recycle boxes in the Library for paper and cans. Watch for them! You’ll find one or more on every floor.
New Non-Plastic Book Bags – Check out our new green bags. They don’t cost much and you can use them over and over to carry all those Library resources home with you.
Green Garden – We bought some beauftiful "air scrubbing" plants for our green garden. Check out the third level for a lovely oasis at the downtown branch.
New Dishes – We purchased a set of dishes for our meeting room so that we can reduce the garbage from meetings that involve food.
Partnering with Sustainable Red Deer - This community group has developed a web site that gives you contacts for local organizations as well as an events calendar. RDPL worked with Sustainable Red Deer to be sure that our web sites complemented one another.
Other – We’re collecting best practices in green libraries and will be doing more over the months ahead. This is the perfect time for us to be doing this as we move into the final construction phase at the Dawe Branch and as we plan for future facilities.
