Good (Kill-a-Watt) News!

RDPL recently received 6 “Kill-a-Watts” from The City of Red Deer’s Electric Light and Power Department. These palm-sized electricity usage monitors will be available for loan in early June at both Library branches.

They’re pretty easy to use. You plug the Kill-a-Watt into a socket and key in the electricity rate. (This appears on your electricity bill or you can call your power company to ask.) You then plug an appliance or machine into the Kill-a-Watt to find out how much electricity it uses and how much it costs to run.

The Great Bookend Challenge

In August of 2010, an intergenerational group used a variety of common household items to create awesome art at Red Deer Public Library. As a result, we decided to challenge the community to create bookends out of odds and ends that might otherwise end up in the dump.

Here are some bookends created by Red Deer artist Paul Boultbee, using recycled materials.

Energy Audit @ RDPL

On April 15-16, Jeremy from ATCO performed an energy audit on the Downtown Branch of The Library.  He looked at 4 things:

1. Electrical: Most especially lighting, but we also discussed opportunities relating to computers (servers & workstations) some of which we've already moved ahead with.
